What is Pilates?

Pilates was formed in the early 1900’s by a man called Joseph Pilates.

It’s a low impact class that works on restoring balance of the body through a series of slow and controlled exercises, which promote strength, mobility and body awareness. Pilates focuses on improving your core strength, posture, balance and coordination and provides long term feel good factor.

Joseph Pilates based his work on three principles – whole body health, whole body commitment and breath, working to encompass the mind, body and spirit.

There are 6 principles to keep in mind during your Pilates practice:

  • Breath
  • Concentration
  • Centring
  • Control
  • Precision
  • Flow

These principles help to build the foundations of Pilates, along with the 34 classical mat exercises and teach the joy of movement and how we can begin to move more efficiently and effectively.

All levels and abilities are welcome to join our classes and you are encouraged to work at your own pace. The classes are designed so that you can be guided to meet your own goals and progress as an individual, while also feeling part of the group in a light hearted and relaxed environment.

If you’ve had a strenuous day, you can use the class to de-stress and refocus, or once you have learnt the basics and if you like a challenge, want to tone and strengthen your body or want those abs of steel you can take the exercises to the next level and enjoy the victories along the way.

The classes are ideal for anyone who is looking to get back into being more active and a perfect opportunity for you to take some time out for yourself to relax and feel like you’ve really accomplished something with your day. After the class you will feel refreshed, relaxed and most probably taller after all of the stretching but don’t be fooled, you will definitely know that you’ve had a workout too!

We also offer one to one sessions and two to one sessions, which are ideal if you are new to Pilates and would like some introductory classes before entering a group class. Or if you are interested in having a more in depth training plan, tailored specifically to your needs and requirements these would be great option!
